MUMS 2017/18!

It’s a month until term starts again, but MUMS preparations for the next academic year have been long underway! We’re eager to get going once again; here’s some of what we’ve got planned over the next semester...

We start the year with our Fresher’s Chorus alongside our Symphony Orchestra, performing Judith Bingham’s ‘Salt in the Blood’. From then on, we have a wide range of exciting performances! We are lucky enough to have Professor David Fanning and Professor Barry Cooper giving pre-concert talks on Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony and Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony respectively, before they are performed in Symphony and Chamber Orchestra concerts. We have several public lunchtime concerts including a Brass and Percussion Showcase, a Jazz themed concert and Baroque Orchestra. Our Big Band and Brass Band will no doubt continue going from strength to strength, whilst MUWO (Wind Orchestra) adopt an American theme for their concert and MUSO (String Orchestra) take on some challenging core repertoire and some new student works. Following its success from last year, we have two New Sounds from Manchester performances, forming part of the New Music Northwest Festival for Contemporary Music, whilst we also look forward to performing Saint Nicolas with the University Chorus in the Whitworth Hall. We end the evening season of the term with our Festive Concert, featuring works by Verdi and Tchaikovsky.

Full details of our concerts can be found here.

After its continued success over 2016/17, our outreach team has expanded for 2017/18- we now have 4 Project Managers to work alongside our Heads of Outreach, James and Katherine! As well as continuing the “Hear This” project and the Outreach Choir, our team are beginning a new project in a nursing home, and will work with the RNCM Outreach too! There is also the relaxed sing-a-long festive lunchtime concert, which is suitable for all and guaranteed to put you in the Christmas spirit.

More information about Outreach can be found here.

We are planning for more MUMS socials than ever this year, but as is tradition we kick off our socials in welcome week with our three-legged pub crawl! The MUMS Christmas Party is always much anticipated, and is sure to be a highlight of the year.
