Jazz Showcase (Public Lunchtime Concert)

The first public lunchtime concert of the academic year showcases the talents of the ever growing number of jazz enthusiasts at the university. Expect anything from Gershwin to Trondheim, soloists to ensembles, and instrumentalists to singers in this FREE concert!

Symphony Orchestra (with pre-concert talk)

Symphony Orchestra return with a performance of Shostakovich’s 10th symphony, under the Baton of Mark Heron. There is also a pre-concert talk by David Fanning about the symphony, whilst Stravinsky’s Feu d’artifice and a new work by Josh Brown will also be performed.

Brass and Percussion Showcase (Public Lunchtime Concert)

An insightful snapshot of the vibrant and energetic performances that the society’s brass and percussion players have to offer. Having won unibrass twice over the past three years, expect a diverse yet consistently high quality level of music making in another FREE lunchtime concert!

Beethoven- Symphony No. 3

MUMS Chamber Orchestra returns for an exciting evening of music. Professor Barry Cooper gives a pre-concert talk (starting at 6.45pm) on Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony, before it is performed. Also featuring Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C, and soloist Josh Beachell performing Weber’s Clarinet Concert No. 2.

After the success of last year’s inaugural performances, New Sounds returns for two concerts, including Mark Anthony Turnage’s Three Farewells, and several exciting new compositions by students of the university.

Chorus and Symphony Orchestra

MUMS Symphony Orchestra collaborates with the University of Manchester Chorus for their 82nd season and the Cosmo Singers, featuring St Nicholas by Benjamin Britten. The concert is within the glorious setting of the Whitworth hall.

Manchester University Big Band returns with an exciting set drawing on big band repertoire from around the world, from Brooklyn, to Trondheim, to Japan.  Under the leadership of Tom Barber and Raddon Stephenson, the band is continuing to perform a unique mix of modern jazz. Whether you’re a big band veteran or a jazz novice, don’t miss out on what will be a fantastic concert!

A rare chance for Manchester audiences to hear historically informed performances of these breathtaking gems of the Italian instrumental repertory by some of the master composers of the Baroque period, featuring student soloists on a variety of instruments.

MUSO returns for a performance of core string repertoire and student works, while Brass Band are sure to entertain with a challenging and varied programme. The concert features soloists Thomas Betts and Malcolm Goodare.
