Vice President, General Member & Interviewed Position Applications 2020/21

If you're interested in going for Vice President, General Member or one of the interviewed positions on the MUMS committee 2020/21, all you need to do is fill out the form below!

Applications close on Monday 23rd March at midnight. Voting for elected positions (Vice President and General Members) will be held shortly afterwards, as well as interviews for interviewed positions.

To run for an elected position you will need to provide a single page manifesto or poster which will be available to be seen by all of our members - so keep it appropriate!

Interviews will usually be carried out by the new President/Head Concert Manager/Rob Guy, and one of the people who hold the role in the committee this year.

Applications and interviews for Ensemble Managers, Communications Manager, PR Design, Outreach Managers and General Concert Managers will be held later in the semester.

Elected Positions

Vice President

The Vice President helps co-ordinate many aspects of MUMS. They lead and oversee the organisation and planning of the MUMS Tour in the first semester, as well as helping oversee the Social Secretaries and the roles of the General Members. They help the President with the efficient running of the society.

General Members (x2 positions remaining)

The General Members work on many projects in the MUMS calendar, from organising the Grade1athon, to Hoodies to helping the Vice-President organise the MUMS Summer Tour. General Members also provide an extra pair of hands signing up new members with the Secretary, helping at the MUMS Freshers Stall, and helping the Publicity Officer distribute marketing material.

Please note that the already elected General Member for next year (Patrick Beare) will not be affected by the result of this election. There are two remaining General Member positions open.

Interviewed Positions

Head Concert Manager (x1)

The Head Concert Manager is responsible for overseeing the management of all concerts throughout the academic year, organising and advising the pool of concert managers. They also act as a form of communication between ensemble managers and Martin Harris Centre staff, ensuring rooms for rehearsals are booked through the office well in advance, whilst overseeing the work of the librarians and personnel managers. As well as this, they are in communication with the Programming Managers with regards to Evening and Lunchtime MUMS concerts. They are responsible for scheduling rehearsals and concerts for all orchestral ensembles, liaising with the professional conductor. The Head Concert Manager is also responsible for organising the hire of any additional instruments and solving any issues that may arise relating to concerts.

Programming Managers (x3)

The Programming Managers arrange the concert programmes for most of the MUMS ensembles, in conjunction with Rob Guy. They choose the repertoire for MUMS Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for the year in advance with Rob, and organise ensembles and sign ups for the lunchtime concerts throughout the year, in close contact with the Head Concert Manager and Concert Managers. They write, produce and print all of the programmes for MUMS Concerts (both lunchtime and evening), to be sold to the public. They may also be asked to produce programmes for the Manchester University Chorus.

Information for Programming Manager Applicants

Please prepare the following, bringing the programmes to your interview:

You must construct TWO full length evening (7.30pm start, 9.30 finish at the latest, allowing time for a 15 minute interval) concert programmes. These should be presented in brief writing with all relevant information (composer, title, instrumentation, duration, publisher, availability of music, etc.). There is no need to write full concert programme notes, but ideas about why you chose the pieces you did, is encouraged.

  • Concert No.1 should be for Symphony Orchestra, and must include EITHER the Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances or Nielsen Symphony No.4. One of the other pieces should have a connection.
  • Concert No.2 should be for a first half of string orchestra and second half of wind orchestra. Soloists can be used at your discretion. One piece by a professional composer working in Manchester should be included. Some kind of theme or linking thread across the whole programme is desirable.

Personnel Managers

The Personnel Managers are responsible for organising the general MUMS auditions in September, October and January, and the Solo Concerto Auditions. They then work as a team to organise seating for the MUMS ensembles in liaison with Rob Guy, and help players find deps for rehearsals. Generally a Personnel Manager is assigned to each individual instrumental section: strings (upper/lower), woodwind or brass based on their previous experience. They work together with the Head Concert Manager regarding seating and arrangements within the concerts.
