MUMS Concerto Auditions 2015/16

Applications are invited from MUMS members who regard themselves as potential soloists for the 2015/16 season. In order to be eligible you must be a returning student – those graduating in summer 2015 are not eligible.

Initial short-listing will be done via recordings. Those interested in applying should submit a CV detailing their relevant experience, together with an audio recording of 15 minutes worth of music. The recording must be live, without editing, and accompanied either by a pianist, orchestra or other ensemble. The repertoire does not need to be a concerto, although it is advised that it is a piece originally written for soloist plus orchestra/ band/ ensemble, rather than a sonata or unaccompanied work. The recording should be recent, ideally having been made in the last 6 months, but doesn’t need to be specially recorded for this application.

The deadline for submission of recordings is 5pm on Friday 23rd January, late applications will not be accepted. Please put your application in a sealed envelope marked “Concerto Auditions” with your student ID number on, and place it in the MUMS pigeon hole in the Martin Harris Centre office.

The short-listing will be carried out by Mark Heron, the MUMS Personnel Manager and the MUMS Programming Manager. 

A number of applicants will then be invited to take part in live auditions which will most likely take place in April 2015. 

For the final round, candidates should perform up to 15 minutes of music, ideally contrasting movements of a concerto or other work for soloist and orchestra/ ensemble. Orchestral tuttis can be shortened in order to fit with time constraints. Candidates must provide their own accompanist – sense of ensemble and interaction with your accompanist is of course an important factor in determining suitability for a solo opportunity.

2 copies of the full score/ piano reduction must be provided for the panel. The auditions will be open to MUMS members.

The panel will place candidates into one of 3 categories:

A - subject to agreement of repertoire and programming needs, a solo opportunity will be offered

B - subject to agreement of repertoire and programming needs, a solo opportunity may be offered

C – a solo opportunity is unlikely to be offered
