The following review of last weekend's String and Brass ensembles concert is written by first year music student Maria Locke.
On Saturday 15th November, I had the privilege of watching MUMS String Orchestra and the University of Manchester Brass Band perform at the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall. The evening commenced with the String Orchestra who played a well constructed programme of pieces including Vaughan-Williams: Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus, all of which were played skilfully and beautifully under the guidance of just as skilled conductors and were enjoyed by all. After the mesmerising string performance, the Brass Ensemble graced the stage with a grand performance of Harrison’s Stratospheric Scenes, conducted by the composer. This was followed by two other pieces which included the very interesting Aether II, written by PhD student Emma Wilde. The almost unbearable roar at the closing of the concluding piece seemed a fitting end to an overall very enjoyable concert. The Band played with competence and was extremely pleasurable to watch. Overall, it was an extremely enjoyable evening. Well done to all involved.
