MUMS FAQs!!

Are there any musical qualifications needed to join MUMS?

No, MUMS is open to anyone! We have unauditioned ensembles such as Wind and String orchestras (MUWO and MUSO), which are open to any MUMS member. We also have many exciting Outreach projects you can get involved in, and a number of fantastic socials too!

Can I try out an ensemble before deciding whether to sign up?

Yes-you can turn up to one of our unauditioned ensembles for a week to see if you like it, without signing up. From then on, you will need to sign up to MUMS to continue.

How do I sign-up?

We do sign-ups at the Freshers fair, during specfied times during the first few weeks of term, and at the first few ensemble rehearsals! You can also sign up online via this link https://manchesterstudentsunion.com/groups/music-society-mums.

Can I use practice rooms?

MUMS members can use basement practice rooms in the Martin Harris Centre at the following times:

Monday-Friday 5pm-9pm

Saturday 9am-5pm

Sunday 10am-5pm

Each practice room is equipped with a piano, mirror and music stand.

I’m not a music student, will I be left out?

Not at all- MUMS has a large number of non-music students, who are heavily involved in all of our ensembles. Rehearsals are mainly organised for Weekday evenings, so that they don’t clash with lectures etc.

Are there any solo opportunities?

Yes! You can sign up to perform in one of our lunchtime concerts as a soloist-these opportunities will be advertised in our Sunday update which is sent out to all MUMS members. (for more info email programming@mumusicsociety.co.uk)

You can also apply to perform a concerto with our symphony orchestra for the following academic year- applications for this are sorted after Christmas and this will also be advertised in our Sunday Update, but for more info email personnel@mumusicsociety.co.uk.

I missed out on the September auditions for Symphony Orchestra, can I still audition?

Email personnel@mumusicsociety.co.uk, and they will be able to help you. We have a second round of auditions very shortly for students that missed out!

I’m worried about coping with my degree on top of MUMS ensembles, what should I do?

Although we always expect you to turn up to all rehearsals on time, we understand that MUMS is a society, and your degree work comes first.

For auditioned ensembles: Once auditions are done in September, you will be informed of all concerts you are seated in for Semester 1. If you’re worried about being in too many concerts, speak to your ensemble manager or concert manager ASAP, and they will be able to help you.

For unauditioned ensembles: Speak to your ensemble manager and they will be able to help you.

Can I get music lessons?

Yes! Email general.members-2017@mumusicsociety.co.uk and they'll help you find a student teacher.

If your question is still unanswered, email president@mumusicsociety.co.uk for general enquiries or secretary@mumusicsociety.co.uk for membership enquiries.
